Niemann-Pick type C is a rare, devastating neurodegenerative disease that affects mostly children but also adults. Currently there is no cure and very sadly, people affected with this disease have a short life expectancy. It is an inherited disease, and therefore, in some families multiple members are afflicted. Niemann-Pick type C is a rare disease that affects all populations worldwide, with currently 90 individuals affected in the UK.

The Charity, Niemann-Pick UK (NPUK) does amazing work in providing vital support to the patients and their families 24/7. Without their work, the public awareness of this disease would be almost non-existent. NPUK is part of an international alliance of NP charities (INPDA) who work to raise awareness and facilitate networking among scientists and doctors worldwide, and thus help develop life-saving treatments for this life-limiting disease.

We are a group of scientists who work on Niemann Pick type C. We are going to walk from the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford to the Niemann Pick UK family conference in Wyboston Lakes in Bedfordshire. We will be walking about 65 miles over 3 days. It will be very hard going as none of us has ever walked this far before.
