Story
In 2009 I started training for the 2010 London Marathon. Had a few injuries along the way but arrived at the start line feeling fit and raring to go. Achieved the first 40k in just under 4hours well on plan to achieve my ambition of less than 4hours and 30minutes. Unfortunately on Birdcage walk I hit the wall (or to be technically correct the tarmac!) where I remained on the floor for the next 45 minutes until St John's Ambulance arrived. One of the many thousand of SJA volunteers took my pulse deemed me fit enough to carry on and gave me the stark choice between walking/crawling "you are less that 1k from the finish line or I can stick you in an ambulance". Thanks to SJA I did finish and have developed tremendous respect for the organisation and all their volunteers.
SJA support thousands of sporting events every year. Last year for example 400,000 people trained on how to save a life through their training programme. They have:
* Over 38,000 volunteers
* Over 1,000 emergency vehicles
* Cover over 35,000 events nationally every year and
* Will have over 1,000 volunteers covering this years London Marathon
