We are backing the Cavell Nurses’ Trust for the support it offers to students starting out on their careers as well as to others who have fallen on hard times. But there is another special reason....

Edith Cavell is celebrated for her work in World War 1 caring for wounded soldiers irrespective of nationality. She was arrested after helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape into neutral Holland, court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a firing squad.

 Among the first of the ‘Cavell 200’ was my relative Segt. Jesse Tunmore (pictured). He survived the war, along with his three brothers, and was one of the pallbearers at her funeral in Norwich in 1919. In his account ‘Escape from Captivity’ he says “She risked her life to save several British Soldiers and eventually they returned home to fight again for their country…I sincerely hope that someone will read these remarks of mine and fight to get her something.”

We aim to use his story as he hoped, to raise awareness of Edith Cavell’s work, supporting her legacy, working with veterans and fundraising for The Cavell Nurses’ Trust.  We really appreciate your support and any contribution you can make.
