Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am doing a tandem skydive from 15,000ft on the 31 August at Dunkeswell Airfield near Honiton, in memory of my Dad Ron Sawyer. He passed away on this date last year; I was with him when he took his last breath. He had a rare form of Dementia called Picks which sadly over 10 years slowly took him away from us. Towards the end he didn’t know who I was, didn’t know what day or year it was and even worse he didn’t know his own name.
His personality changed too, from a big gentle, caring softy (who would even cry watching the TV show Animal Hospital) to a forgetful, confused man, sometimes aggressive, violent and rude. In the last two years he had to wear adult nappies, it was very upsetting to see the man you always loved and looked up to, turning into a child needing so much looking after.
I was thinking what I could do in memory of my dad, something that he would make him proud of me. I want to raise as much money as possible for the RICE charity, because the RICE clinic first diagnosed and treated him. They help so many people who have this devastating illness and their families. My dad even signed over his brain for research into dementia diseases before he got too ill. So between us, if we can help other families get through these hard times and find more and better treatments, that would be amazing.
And lastly you’re probably thinking, why a skydive? well it’s because my dad used to be a Para in the army and used to talk about how many jumps he had done and how much he loved it. I thought this would be the perfect way to pay tribute to him and remember him on the anniversary of his passing.
I’m sure he will be laughing with me as I jump but then would say well done rat bag (that was what he called me). So please, please dig deep and help me raise as much money as possible for this great charity. Don’t forget the gift aid if you are a tax payer, the government will give tax money back to the charity.
Thank you so much
