In February 2015, at the age of 38 with a husband and two small children (3 & 4) I got up from the sofa one evening and felt a small lump in my breast. Little did I know it wouldn’t be an innocent cyst like my GP, the consultant and I thought it would be, but 4 small but aggressive grade 3 tumours that had spread to my lymph nodes. Thus started the surreal journey of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. I spent most of 2015 in and out of the hospital for various scans, operations and treatments including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mastectomy, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy! It was both an emotionally and physically tough time. But there were moments of light too. I had some fantastic support from friends and family, spent precious time with my children, and at times felt well enough to manage some physical exercise, something I wasn’t achieving when I was ‘fit and well’ and at work!
When the opportunity arose to take part in a super sprint triathlon (400m/20km/4km) with a group of other ladies who’d been through the same, I jumped at it.
I've never considered myself sporty, least of all an athlete of any sort. Marathons and triathlons, these are things other people do and I admire their tenacity and determination but I've never considered them for me. My diagnosis has changed me though and now I know the fragility of life, in a way I also now feel invincible. I want to be able to say I've achieved this physical and mental challenge and tested my body and mind. So here I go, desperately trying to find time around work and my family to train for this challenge.
The Phoenix Foundation, setup this year in the UK, have provided the opportunity and both tangible and emotional support to enable me to do this in the way of a loan bike and wetsuit, athlete training, motivational and psychological support. I will be raising funds for other ladies in similar positions to have the same opportunity as I’ve had. You can read much more about the Foundation at http://www.teamphoenixfoundation.co.uk/.
