I, along with many others have shared a journey of a truly brave and inspirational little boy. I have followed Cameron Caves inspirational journey through Facebook and texts as his family strived to overcome his heart condition, updating us selflessly so we could adore his latest pictures, read with anguish his down times, and delight in his highs. Sadly we were also devastated in the news that he was taken from us after such a short 9 months of his life.
As an outsider looking in you feel helpless as you watch the grieving family’s pain. There is only so much you can say. There is much I can do though as I know Stephanie and Craig would like Cameron to have a lasting footprint at the hospital he was cared so lovingly at. This will be a memory of his braveness and also serve as a big thank you for all the hard work the staff at the Evelina Children’s Hospital do. The hospital is amazing and cares for children and young people from across south London and south east England. The hours they work, the love they give both child and parents when supporting them. Simply, they understand. A nod, a smile of recognition of knowing just what you are going though.
I decided to think with my feet and wallet and do something positive. I have booked a place through the hospital fundraising team at the hospital and am booked to run the London Half marathon- a distance I have never run on October 2.. Please sponsor me as the funds will be going directly to the hospital ward at the Evelina that worked so tirelessly for Cameron. Monies will enable them to keep helping other families as they helped Stephanie and Craig.
Footnote from Stephanie & Craig:
“Cameron came through so much in his short life- overcoming open heart surgeries time and time again, including two in just one day, and even beating deadly endocarditis. We were told many times to expect the worst and on each occasion Cameron battled through and overcame every one of the many obstacles in his way.
Cameron was not expected to make it following his recent two open heart surgeries in one day however despite even suffering a massive stroke, once again he battled through in true Cameron style.
We now believe he got through it to come and spend some time at home with us- where he was always at his happiest and we spent an amazing 12 days at home which were filled with happiness, love, laughter and smiles.
Cameron touched the world in a way no other can, leaving not only wonderful memories but lasting imprints both in our hearts and also in the medical world, teaching world leading experts new things.
We hope that his legacy will save others in the future and feel so truly privileged to have had Cameron, the most inspirational baby boy in the world, in our lives”...
