For 2012 Agrovista has nominated two charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and The Vic Dashwood Memorial Fund which raises funds for St Nicholas Hospice. This page is in aid of the Vic Dashwood Memrial Fund. This July, four intrepid Agrovista cyclists will attempt to ride from Lands End to John O’Groats in aid of the two chosen charities.   The four that will take part are Hazel Stockdale-Wright, Graham Edwards, James MacWilliam and Simon Pretty.   They will start the marathon on the 17 July and aim to finish on July 28 after completing nearly 1000 miles in the saddle.   Each rider will have responsibilities during the ride- Hazel -  First Aid. Graham – Team Mechanic James  – Support driver logistics Simon – Day to Day route planner, guest riders liason & team nutrition.   The legs are   Tues 17th July     Lands End   -  Helston Wed 18th    Helston  -  Tavistock Thurs 19th  Tavistock  - Axbridge Fri 20th   Axbridge via Bristol  -  Leominster Sat 21st  Leominster  - Warrington Sun 22    Warrington -  Kendal Mon 23rd  Kendal - Lockerbie Tues 24th   Lockerbie -   Stirling Weds 25   Stirling -   Kinloch Rannoch Thurs 26th Kinloch Rannoch - Inverness Fri 27th   Inverness -     Wick Sat 28th   Wick  -   John o Groats   Vic’s Story The Vic Dashwood Memorial Fund was set up in 2008 by his widow, Susan Whymark, after she pledged to try and raise £20,000 to fund a nurse on the Community Hospice Team at St. Nicholas Hospice in Bury St. Edmunds.   In early 2007 Vic developed a persistent cough.  For several months he put it down to allergies or a cold he couldn’t shift.  After attending his doctor and having a clear x-ray result, and as a life long non smoker, he was diagnosed with several non life threatening conditions.  Sadly on 5 December 2007 he was diagnosed with an undetected, advanced, inoperable lung cancer.   After 4 and half months of treatment Vic was told there was nothing more that could be done at which point he asked if he could go home to die   At that time, other than district nurse input there was no other support available to allow him to return home.  However, with Vic’s determination to go home a care package was set up, including hospital bed, oxygen and all the medication and equipment needed to care for him at home and also because his mother-in-law had been the Nurse Manager of Priscilla Bacon Lodge Palliative Care unit in Norwich and was able to cope.   Under supervision from his GP and the district nurse team he died on 29 April 2008 in the privacy of his own home aged just 43.  Had his family not been there to help him this would not have been possible.   Vic was an exceptional man and because of his generosity to others his wife felt she wanted to set up a fund in his memory and following the launch of the Community Team at St. Nicholas Hospice created for people in the same situation Vic found himself.   It costs £10,000 a day to run St. Nicholas Hospice who only get 22% funding from the government the rest is funded by charity.   Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
