My Mam (Joy Hewson) is the closest person I hold in my heart she was not only my mam but my best friend and watching her through her illness was the hardest thing I have had to face, she loved all her family and friends and adored her grandchildren and was always happy no matter what was happening around her.

She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in November 2012 which they removed and I told myself that was it all caught, when over the course of the next year it slowly got worse and spread and within weeks coming into September the cancer had really took over and we could not provide the care she needed and she went into St Bedes Hospice at Gateshead Queen Elizabeth Hospital. During her stay there the care she received amazing care from all staff and they were really good with the family. Sadly on 9th September 2013 she passed away with all her family around her.

Hospice care aims to improve the lives of people who have life limiting or terminal illnesses helping them live well before they die. In the UK £1.6 million is spent everyday on hospice care with adult hospices receiving an average of 34% and children hospices receiving an average of 19% from the government. Help the Hospices is working to improve hospice care in the UK and be the voice in government to make hospice care heard how great they were for my mam and family this is a charity I will hold close to my heart.
