Story
Earlier this year I lost someone so dear to me, I didn’t understand how to deal with it, it didn’t make sense, and I don’t think ever will. On 13th January 2014 the world lost a truly great and beautiful person to cancer. Victoria Van Der Westhuizen has been an absolute tremendous loss and one that will never be forgotten. Anyone who met Vicki for the first time could be forgiven for thinking they’d known her for years. She could make anyone feel completely comfortable in her company, as she possessed such endearing warmth. There was always a genuine inquisitiveness about her, a sincere interest in people, towards people she knew and also those she didn’t. For Vicki it was important for her to make a difference, this was something that came so naturally. I don’t think she quite realised just how many she had already helped in her short time.
Cancer is affecting people all over the world but with support and belief we can make a difference. Even if it is just to help one person come to terms with a loss or to help another live with the battle itself, we can all do small things that can help others who are scared, and together we can make a difference. I thought how can I make a difference, how can I help or raise money for a cause that so needs our support? For me I have a real fear of heights and as I’ve got older have become anxious towards flying in general. Somehow I came to the conclusion that I would do a Skydive, something that would take me to the edge, the limit, the ultimate fear-facing experience. Believe me when I say ‘I couldn’t think of anything worse then literally throwing myself out of a plane at 10,000ft…’
I hope to raise money for Victoria’s Promise. A charity set up in memory of Vicki designed to make a difference in the fight against cancer, funding for research and to improve the lives of those currently fighting the battle themselves. The dive will be taking place on the 21st June, a week after what would have been her 30th birthday. Please dig deep and support this amazing cause.
