Finlay's story by his Mum, Tara:

After falling asleep at nursery on a few occasions and a routine blood test last September showing he had anaemia, Finlay was seen by a doctor who thought his symptoms needed further investigation. After a few weeks, Finlay was referred to Addenbrookes hospital for a bone marrow biopsy to take place on the 26 October 2010.At this point, we were told that he probably had a blood infection since his symptoms were not typical of leukaemia.Understandably, we were completely shocked and devastated (still feel like these words are an understatement!) to hear the results confirming Finlay had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He was 3½, and post blood transfusion, looked like any other little boy his age, running around and playing happily.Finlay was immediately transferred to the childrens oncology unit at Addenbrookes hospital where he began Regimen A induction treatment for ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia).

Our hearts were broken yet again when we were told the results from the 28 day Minimal Residual Disease test which came back as ‘high risk’ (high risk of relapse after treatment). After having to digest more awful news, we then had to make a massive decision concerning Finlay’s treatment. The choice was to either keep him on Regimen A; the least possible toxic chemotherapy, or choose a trial where a computer randomly selects Finlay to either remain on Regimen A or change to Regimen C (most toxic), there being a 50/50 chance of getting A or C.My initial, protective reaction was to keep him on A, but after lots of soul searching we decided that choosing the trial was the right option for us.Finlay got C, and looking back now, we believe we’ve given him the best chance ever of beating his blood cancer.

We are eternally grateful to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research because Finlay would probably not be alive today if it wasn’t for the work they do.Finlay’s school asked me once which charity they should support at an event they held to help Finlay. My reply was the one that is ultimately saving his life…
