Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Meet Our Events Team: Arlene Smith, Christina McKay, Claire O'Rourke, Bernie Ovens & Jacqueline Marshall.

Introduction

We've been supporting St Andrews Hospice and it's incredible work for a number of years now, with each of the team giving their time, talents and sometimes just donations to support the amazing care that St Andrews Hospice deliver to patients & their families across Lanarkshire and Glasgow. It's different this year though, 'this time it's personal'.

Last year Arlene's relationship with St Andrew's turned from fundraiser/friend/volunteer to 'receiver of services'  when sadly, her own precious mum, Jean Newman was admitted to St Joseph's ward for 4 months, where she received end of life care. Jean passed away on 29 December 2014, aged 66. Our team want to thank the hospice and to give a little back to make sure that other patients and their families can continue to receive the amazing care  and support offered both inside the hospice wards and throughout our communities. St Andrews Hospice needs to raise £65,000 each week to deliver that care!!!!!!

Background to Memorial

Jean spent all of her life looking after others(Her husband, her children, , her frail mother, her grandchildren, her customers  and through work, severely disabled children) yet ironically, she was humbled  at being the beneficiary of the care St Andrews bestowed upon her and her family as her precious life was coming to an end. She took nothing in life for free and nothing for granted. Jean brought her family up with strong morals, a sense of integrity and taught them to be kind and generous to others.   She'd want us to give something back so that other families can experience the unique support delivered in the hospice. Jean knew about this trek, but not the tribute to her, she'd be annoyed at all the fuss, but secretly delighted inside.  She was very proud of the hospice fundraisers and volunteers.

Big Target v Big Challenge

Our fundraising target (£25,000 ) seems as challenging as the physical challenge of trekking through the rugged Canyon this time, but every penny donated to the hospice will make each tired step and everyone of our blisters' worthwhile, knowing that it will give real support to people in the hospice when they need it most. Every penny used in the hospice is a penny well spent. The trek itself will be the culmination of a series of challenges like, climbing Ben Nevis, running 10Ks and cycling from London to Paris.

Our Plea

We all hope that we never need to receive direct support from places like St Andrews, but Cancer is an unfortunate fact of life as is the likelihood that we will all know someone affected by it in our lifetime.  This trek and the series of associated events/challenges is being hosted in Jean's memory, but the hospice is here for us all, so please give of your time, talents or even a small donation to help us, help St Andrews.
