Story
From Monday 25 November until Sunday 1 December I will be attempting to spend just £7 on any food and drink which passes my lips. And no, don’t worry, I’m not going to be turning into the biggest scrounger around, in fact I won’t be accepting free food or drinks either. So why am I doing this?
December 1 will mark the one year anniversary of the death of a little boy I never had the fortune to meet. Sacha Gauci died aged just two from a very aggressive brain tumour, a tragic loss for his parents Vincent and Hannah and older brother Oliver.
Despite the fact that Sacha’s life was not able to be saved, his parents were grateful for all the care and treatment that he did benefit from during the short time he was in hospital. So when they heard about a World Child Cancer project working to help children with cancer in Malawi, they were moved to hear that children there with very treatable cancers were often dying due to lack of money and available treatment - they have gone on to set up the Sacha Gauci Remembrance Fund and have so far raised over £16,000 for World Child Cancer's project in Malawi.
So where does £7 for 7 days come in? In Malawi over half the population live on less than $1 per day. I am unsure of how I will manage to pay for food for a week with just £1 per day, and could not conceive the idea of having to also cover medical treatment for a sick child with that too.
So, to raise money for Sacha’s Remembrance Fund, and help children with cancer in Malawi, as I say, I’ll be living off just £7 for a week. I won’t be using up any food in the cupboards, the only things that will pass my lips will have been paid for from my £7 (or water from the tap).
What am I asking you to do?
Well, there are various ways you can get involved and show your support for children with cancer in Malawi:
- Give something up – perhaps do without that bottle of wine/ Starbucks coffee/meal out one day and donate the money to this instead
- Eat & drink guilt free and sponsor me instead!
Just £50 will cover the costs of chemotherapy for a child with cancer in Malawi – please give generously!
