Story

In January 2009, Rob Gauntlett and James Atkinson's lives were cut tragically short in a climbing accident in the French Alps. An inspiration to many, Rob encouraged everyone to climb their Everest, and to keep putting one foot in front of the other, until you reach your goal.

Following their accident, a group of Rob and James's closest friends and family cycled from John o Groats to Lands End, a ride both boys enjoyed themselves. We completed the 1000 miles of freedom and fresh air in August 2009, a huge personal and emotional achievement for all involved.

Three year later, after vowing to never sit on a bike again, I have agreed to hit the continent and 'Pedal Home From Provence' - 1000km from Provence to Petworth.

The Cause

In Uganda, Nalango Secondary School has some very energetic teachers and students, but very little in the way of facilities and resources. Rob's fund has so far helped to build 5 classrooms and 8 latrines - but the school is growing and more classrooms, water tanks, desks and teachers' houses are needed. Work is being carried out through the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, set up by the parents of another young man who sadly lost his life. This project is a brilliant example of African development - more information can be found at http://www.henryvanstraubenzeemf.org.uk/.
