Story
On Friday 13th May 2016, we will be abseiling 250 feet down the front of the St Thomas' Hospital to raise much needed funds for the Evelina Children's Hospital in memory of Cameron.
Thanks to the Evelina, Cameron had a remarkable life, full of truly ground breaking advances in the heart world! From not being expected to survive birth, he went on to overcome open heart surgeries time and time again, including two in just one day, be the first person in the UK to have a particular open heart surgery, and even beat the rare and deadly endocarditis- being the first baby in the world with a complex heart condition to do so after receiving ground breaking new treatment. We were told on many occasions to expect the worse and each time Cameron battled through and overcame every obstacle in his way, with help from the Evelina!
Cameron was not expected to survive his open heart surgeries however despite even suffering a massive stroke leaving him paralysed on one side, he always battled through in true Cameron style making miraculous recoveries and defying all the odds to come home with us, where he was always at his happiest- spending time at home with his brother and sister- days which were filled with happiness, love, laughter, smiles and giggles.
Following eight months of open heart surgeries, other surgeries, medical procedures, numerous transfusions and spending the majority of his life in intensive care, Cameron's heart was the best the best it had ever been and for the first time we were all able to relax slightly, knowing that Cameron should now be able to grow big enough and have enough time clear of endocarditis to be accepted onto the heart transplant list.
Devastatingly however, Cameron's life was then cruelly snatched away from him, just as it was really beginning, by the failings of our local hospital. Instead of focusing his memory on their failings however, we would rather focus on the amazing work of the Evelina Children's Hospital that gave us almost nine special months with our special baby boy and our amazing boy himself.
Cameron touched the world in a way no other can, leaving not only wonderful memories but lasting imprints both in our hearts and also in the medical world, teaching world leading experts new things that they have been able to use to help other children like Cameron.
We hope that Cameron's legacy will save others in the future and feel so truly privileged to have had Cameron in our lives.
The Evelina Children's Hospital played a huge role in Cameron's life, in all of our lives and holds a very special place in our hearts. We continue to raise money and support the hospital in any way that we can to thank those involved in his care and allow them to continue with the amazing work that they do- from his surgeon Professor David Anderson who saved his life time and time again, to his Consultant Cardiologist Gareth Morgan who always believed in him and the nurses, doctors, cardiologists and many many other medical professionals (Cameron even had his own microbiologist!) who all formed part of Team Cameron.
The St Thomas Abseil seemed like a fitting fundraiser, given that Cameron started his life in the St Thomas' Hospital main building. We could see the London Eye from Cameron's cot and I used to look out of the window with him showing him the sights- he seemed particularly fascinated by the lights at night.
