Story
So what is the National Three Peaks Challenge? It involves climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland , Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales, usually within 24 hours.
It’s a strenuous undertaking that involves around 10,000 feet of climbing and 25 miles of walking in 24 hours, with little opportunity for recovery between peaks.
The ordeal will begin early on the Saturday morning at the base of Ben Nevis in Scotland where we will begin the climb (4409ft), but there will be no time for sightseeing as we will immediately descend and drive straight to the Lake District where we will climb and descend Scafell Pike (3209ft) before driving to Wales for the final Peak of Snowdon (3560ft), hopefully all within 24 hours. The total distance walked is 27miles with a total climb of 9,800ft!
Our chosen charities for this challenge are Cancer Research UK and Wild Futures (this page is Cancer Research UK). We’ve chosen these organisations as they were both important to Pamela Kean who passed away last year from breast cancer at the age of just 43.
Pamela worked at Phoenix Community Housing prior to her cancer diagnosis and many of us taking part in the challenge have very fond memories of the time we spent with her. The three peaks challenge is something Pamela considered doing, in one of her madder moments, she never got the chance so we’ll be doing it on her behalf.
