Story
WE DID IT!!!! Amazingly I am still alive! It was a brilliant day, and yes we may be broken, aching and ridiculously sweaty but we have managed to run the 10k in memory of our lovely Charlie. It was an emotional day with a rollercoaster of feelings - sadness that we are doing this because we have lost Charlie, overwhelmed because of the amazing friends and family we have who have supported us and the incredibly supportive and lovely people who ran as part of Team Charlie - much, much love for all of them - and also proud because we actually did it! So here's how it all began:
Being most probably one of the most unfittest people in Surrey should be a worthwhile enough reason alone to sponsor me to run the FSID British 10K run on 11th July 2010 in London. However, some of my lovely, lovely friends and family have decided to run alongside me and we have formed Team Charlie!
As many of you know, Matt and I tragically lost our beautiful son Charlie Hamilton Power on 10th March 2003 aged just 6 weeks and 1 day old. He was a victim of SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, more commonly known as Cot Death. Our entire world was blown apart, how do you move on from something like this...? We moved back to the UK and found out about FSID, Foundation for the Study of Infant Death www.fsid.org. FSID offer an amazing support network to bereaved families, a helpline for you to call with your questions, or just to help you get through the day, befrienders who put you in contact with other bereaved families who can help you get back on your feet, and so much more. Most importantly, they offered the Care of Next Infant Scheme, this is a scheme to help and reassure you if you have another child, it is a free scheme that wasn't just offered to us, but has also been offered to members of our family who have had children. I'm not sure if Matt and I would have coped quite so well if it wasn't for the CONI scheme, we had weekly visits, diary packs, health visitor advice, priority doctor visits.
FSID are also the official charity doing groundbreaking research into SIDS and why it still happens and will hopefully one day have an answer for why Charlie was taken from us. They are constantly publishing research papers and offering advise to parents and families on the safest way to bring up your baby - sleeping on their backs, no sleeping in the parents' beds etc...
So... all this costs money! Lots of money! I want to give something back and hopefully, if you're reading this and I haven't lost you from prattling on too long, you will be kind enough to donate something towards our worthwhile cause. There's a team of us running the 10k, if you don't want to donate but want to get involved somehow and fancy a challenge join our team! Team Charlie needs you! The more the merrier! Thank you for your time and see you on the finish line...
