Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. You don't have to dowse yourself with iced water to raise funds for charity (but don't let me stop you!).

I broke my back and destroyed my spinal cord after crashing my motorbike on Mad Sunday at the Isle of Man. I knew the very moment that I stopped sliding and spinning that I was paralysed and my life would never be the same again.

I spent 7 months in hospital not knowing what the future would hold. I thought my life was over. I was completely paralysed from the chest down. There were so many things I couldn't do.  I remember the initial joy of sitting in a wheelchair and getting released from my 10 week stint of lying in the hospital bed. Then it struck me that I would be seeing the world from that height for the rest of my life. Never to enjoy the simple pleasures like walking on a beach and feeling the sand under my toes again, let alone all the other pleasures that you take for granted when you are (comparably) young and fit.

My wife bullied me into going on a multi-activity week for people with spinal cord injuries where I tried all sorts of sports, but nothing clicked for me until I tried Blokart sailing. Within 5 minutes I was whizzing around a course squealing with joy and knew that I had found something that I would really enjoy. After 10 years of involvement with the sport I became British and European Champion in my class by beating 18 able-bodied pilots in my class.

Through Sportability I tried quadbiking, gliding, microlighting and a host of other activities that made me realise that disability was as much a state of mind as a physical limitation.

I became involved in helping the charity and saw how the outdoor and adventurous activities that we were providing really lifted people and helped them mend their thinking from 'What I can't do' to 'What can I do next?' -It really does change lives!

Sportability supports people with paralysis; SCI, MS, CP, stroke and other conditions. All the activities are free so that there are no barriers to participation.
