Story

Please help us restore a Pacific Islands Paradise.

The birds of the Pacific are in peril. Since people arrived, half of all the bird species living there then are now extinct. This tragedy continues with 81 more species threatened with extinction today.

Pacific birds evolved on islands without predators but currently, on almost all of these islands, rats and other destructive invaders now relentlessly prey on native species.

Removing these invaders is the immediate priority. BirdLife International has assessed where this is feasible and has already removed pests from more than 30 Islands in five Pacific countries –Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Palau.

Nowhere is the situation more urgent than in French Polynesia, where most native birds are at immediate risk of extinction due to the pests introduced to the Acteon and Gambier archipelagos.

These stunningly beautiful islands are globally important for seabirds like the Endangered White-throated Storm-petrel and Phoenix Petrel.

Sadly they are being decimated by invasive species such as rats and goats. Before these alien animals arrived, the islands were ideal refuges for Critically Endangered Tuamotu Sandpiper and Polynesian Ground-dove. We plan to make them that way again by permanently removing these threats; providing a bright future for the people and wildlife that live there.

By sharing transport, equipment and expertise, we’ve significantly reduced the cost of clearing all six islands that are still threatened. We’ve also successfully secured two thirds of the funding needed.

However, we urgently need a further $200,000 to enable us to tackle all six islands together in May 2015. Your generous support will be used to pay for hiring boats, helicopters and staff to ensure our years of careful planning is expertly implemented.

Your support will create pest-free islands, safe and ready for the reintroduction of the Critically Endangered Polynesian Ground Dove and Tuamotu Sandpiper.

Please make a gift for nature, and help us to restore the Acteon and Gambier archipelagos to their former glory - unspoiled and pest-free so they become a Pacific Islands Paradise once more.
