Story

This time last year I became a mum for the first time. Nick and I were blessed with our bundle of joy – Jasper on April 12th 2015. This month, along with celebrating Jasper’s first birthday, I am running the London Marathon in memory of my Sister Emma -‘Emsie’, who tragically didn’t live to see her sons 1st birthday, nor will Jasper ever know his Aunty Emma except through photos and stories.

As many of you know, Emma’s mental health deteriorated dramatically after having a baby, and whilst we know Emma suffered unnecessarily and that change within the NHS for women suffering from a peri-natal mental health illness is promised (thanks to all the campaign support we have had), the necessary resources are still years away and the reality is that many vulnerable new mums are suffering now and need help, support and understanding from women who can relate following their own experiences.

This is what the Association of Post Natal Illness (APNI) can offer. The service is run on a fully voluntary basis and supports both new mums and their families who may need advice or support. We have supported APNI for over 5 years - we know that our fundraising has made a significant difference to them and I hope that I can raise further much needed funds through running the marathon in Emma’s memory.

I never imagined I would run a marathon in memory of Emma; life has dealt my family and all of Emma’s friends a devastating blow. We can only continue to raise awareness and funds to support a very underfunded area of healthcare.

I appreciate any donation you can make, knowing that I am helping others will spur me on to the finish!

With much thanks,

Lucie
