Crossbones graveyard came into being in the medieval ages and was the last resting place of those outlawed and excluded.
It is being made into a memorial garden, where all are welcome. We are proud to be involved in the transformation of this hidden gem, into a quiet contemplative sacred space in the heart of London.
Until June 2015 Crossbones Garden was an unconsecrated graveyard. The remains of Children or the poor or those born out of wedlock, make up more than half of the 1,500 bodies buried there.
The rest are
people who lived out their days in the workhouse and were too poor to afford a
churchyard burial. It was also the final resting place of prostitutes, who had
to pay the Bishop of Winchester a fee in order to be licensed to work in the area
and were known as “Winchester Geese” Some of the poor souls in the Clink street prison also ended up interred there.
By donating you will help to create a special space. The garden will be open to all, to come and sit in during the day and enjoy a moment of serenity, in an otherwise busy part of central London. It will also serve as a memorial garden, a place of remembrance that links this past to the present.
In addition to the wish list above and equally important is money to
train volunteers who can oversee keeping the garden open every day so anyone - yourself included - can come and have the opportunity to pause for breath.
