Story

Three years ago Amber began to signs of a rare neurological condition that affects the muscles. Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.

Amber now walks using either crutches or a walking frame, or she propels herself in her wheelchair for longer distances.

We want to bring awareness for this condition and raise money to support the Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia charity (UK Registered Charity No: 1109398). This condition affects 1 in 10,000 people.

HSP is a degenerative condition of the upper motor neurones. This affects the nerves located in the brain controlling voluntary movement, they deliver signals to the lower motor neurones located in the spinal cord. These spinal motor neurones send messages to the muscles. In HSP this doesn’t happen and it causes spasticity and weakness in the muscles. Over time this will get worse.

Other symptoms are exaggerated reflexes, poor balance and an abnormal gait. Bladder problems and excessive fatigue are also associated with this condition.

There is no treatment to stop, prevent or cure HSP but some relief can be found from regular physiotherapy and medicines as well as surgery to release muscle contractures.

Please support us at Total Fitness Huddersfield next Saturday and Sunday (the 18th and 19th of April) for the launch of the new Les Mills UK releases. Bring your pennies, bring a friend, join in our classes and buy some cakes.
Thanks, Sally and family
