Roughly 7 years ago our family received the devastating news that my wife Karan had a brain tumour. As you can imagine our worlds were shattered. After hundreds of visits to the Walton centre in Liverpool (who I have to mention as this place is magic) 2 lots of brain surgery, the 2nd being an open craniotomy (awake) and 1 course of radiotherapy at clatterbridge, karan is still loving life. However the incurable after effects from the surgery and radiotherapy karan suffers a lot from fatigue, memory loss, concentration problems, speech problems to name a few. She can be in bed for days on end just simply suffering from fatigue.
The way she copes with not only from living with a brain tumour but the silent effects that you can't see is nothing short of amazing. She inspires me every day!
I have undertaken a few fund raising events for astro fund before, but nothing on this scale. A number of other people who are also running this marathon has carried out previous funding for astrofund on behalf of karan and they have been a big inspiration to me in undertaking this huge challenge
I have never been a naturally fit person and have never liked running, but watching Karans sister Vicky finish this same marathon last year, having just finished a full breakfast and with a pint in my hand, I couldn't help think that I needed to do this in 2016. My thoughts were if Karan can cope with her life and the previous surgeries etc then I can cope with running a few miles, 26 to be exact.........
So I spoke with Vicky and few of the lads and there are 12 of us who have committed to doing this marathon. The commitment everyone has shown in a bid to get fit and in most cases including mine, to loose weight is brilliant.
Myself, REBECCA WILLIS, VICKY FERGUSON, IAN FERGUSON, DARYL EVANS, MARK HOWARD, NEIL HOWARD, DAVID HESKETH, BILLY MACDONALD, KEV WARD, JEFF ENAMU TIM RIDGEWAY and PHIL IRELAND are running the Liverpool rock n roll marathon on 29th may 2016. I've no doubt the challenge in front of us is huge and there will be blood sweat and tears along the way but as friends do, we will pull each other through!!!
We have also signed up for the vitality half marathon in March to help us on our way
We are raising money for astrofund. The brain tumour charity provides funding for research into hopefully finding a cure or at least better treatments to prolong lives. A few years back myself and Karan went down to the university of London hospital to see where the fund raising money goes. We spent the day there where scientists were providing up update as to where they were up with finding out why these tumours grow and what is the course of them and hopefully one finding a cure for them!!!! it is vital that the astrofund receives money through fund raising as the government do not put any money into research into these types of brain tumours.
please donate what you can no matter how big or small, whatever you can afford will be greatly appreciated
