Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
A mix of staff and volunteers working for Older People's Services in Hove and Steyning are walking between our two older people's day centres - at St John's Centre, Palmeira Square in Hove and Dingemans Court Shooting Fields, Steyning. So far, we are Donna, Angela, Margaret, Georgina, Tandy, Anna, Christine, Leanna Shaw, Emma plus plenty of room for others!
We will be leaving St John's Centre in Palmeira Square Hove at 8.30am planning to walk 11.5 miles to Dingemans to arrive at 12.30pm for lunch. After lunch we will set off again for St John's Centre hoping to arrive by 5pm.
This is a round trip of 23 miles and will be quite a mean feat for us. We plan to have two brief breaks for refreshments and calls of nature during each direction, one at Carats Cafe and one in Shoreham just before we begin the river section on the way out. We will be carrying water, snacks, hats, suncream and a fun-filled itinierary of jokes and songs to keep people's morale up (sorry folks, that's my style...).
Our day centres provide fun, companionship, entertainment, exercise and other opportunities for older people and other members of the communities in which they're based. Our day centre members are all older people who appreciate the opportunity to spend time with friends old and new, having been collected from their homes if required, making a change in their routine, eating a splendid meal and having a great time! St John's Centre in Hove is open 7 days a week, and Dingemans Day Centre in Steyning is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as well as having a Sunday lunch each week.
We have many invaluable volunteers who contribute hours and hours of work to Older People's Services, thereby enabling the services to run at all. Our volunteers are from all areas of life. We have young people from local schools and colleges who want to gain some work experience or are building up their hours towards their Duke of Edinburgh qualifications. We also have many long standing volunteers some of whom are well into their second decade of supporting the services. Also, we have volunteers who have come and gone, and some who can only stay for a short time; we are grateful to them all and appreciate the individual contributions each of them make. We absolutely couldn't do it without them, and now several of them are going to join together to do this walk, with some staff members llimping along too.
If you are able to sponsor us any amount, however small, please Gift Aid it if you can (you have to have paid the equivalent amount in tax in the year you gift aided otherwise HMRC gets it back off you! Thanks, Maggie, for telling us that!).
