Great news ! We have now reached our target of £32,000 for the completion of Jacks Room, with the inclusion of the Gift Aid money at £5,000. We are aware that some additional money is still due to be added to this site and this will all be put to great use for the upkeep of the room by UHCW.

Jacks Room and kitchen will officially be opened on 10th April 2015 and we will add photos of the finished rooms to this page soon after.

Jackie, Dean and Sophie would like to express their sincere thanks for all of the donations they have received towards Jacks legacy which will live on for many years to come thanks to your generosity. They are so pleased that you have helped them to achieve their aim of helping families who will experience the same painful circumstances that they went through. We hope that Jacks Room will make things a little easier for these families.

Jack Smith passed away on 2nd June 2014, aged 11, after a 3 week stay on the Children's Ward of University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. During Jack's last few days, the hospital staff created a temporary room within the Children's Ward to make the family's final days with Jack as comfortable and memorable as possible. Jack's parents Dean and Jackie, found the room invaluable during this very difficult time, allowing them to spend as much time as possible with Jack and his immediate family, with the support of health care professionals, both during the last few days of his life and for a period of time after his passing.

Dean and Jackie would very much like to support University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire's Children's Unit to provide a permanent room within the hospital to offer bereaved parents a private and quiet place away from the busy ward to spend time with their child following his or her passing. Dean and Jackie have asked that all donations, including those associated with Jack's funeral, are made to this very important legacy in celebration of Jack's life. "Jack's Room" is being discussed with the hospital to help families like Jack's to spend precious time with their child in the way that Dean and Jackie were able to in the latter days of Jack's life.

Jack was a special boy who had suffered with a rare metabolic condition called Kearns Sayers Syndrome for the last 8 or so years. Kearns Sayers Syndrome is a Mitochondrial Disorder which currently does not have a cure and affects the organs within the body. Jack's treatment involved regular stays in hospital and a cocktail of more than 30 supplements and medicines each day to keep his body in balance. His attitude towards his illness was unwavering and his personality infectious for everyone who spent time with him. Jack loved playing practical jokes on his friends and family but his largest enjoyment was saved for watching his beloved Coventry Blaze. 

Jack was brave to the last and never once moaned about his illness. He will always be remembered for his courage and his sense of humour. To his family, Jack was a gladiator in the way he approached his illness and to his friends he was a hero and true inspiration. Jack will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
