Story
Why I want to help in India
My name is Jade Lownsbrough and I’m 18 years old. In 2011 The SAFE Foundation took ten NEET’s to Sierra Leone, and one of the lucky ten was me! With jobs being so scarce in the UK at the moment it’s really hard for young people to be given a chance. Until I found out about The SAFE Foundation I was feeling a bit lost in life. The SAFE Foundation gave me five weeks of training on HIV, AIDS, nutrition and life skills ready to teach to the children of Sierra Leone. The project was truly amazing! It opened my eyes to different cultures and has made me so curious about what’s happening in the rest of the world. Being shocked by the corruption and poverty in Sierra Leone, and seeing how happy and appreciative the locals were has made me feel like I have unfinished business! I want to help out as much as I can, wherever I can. It’s a lovely feeling to know that people have benefited from the small amounts I have done to help, whether it’s physically or emotionally.
What I will be doing in India
The project will take place August 2012 in Thirukoilur Taluk Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, India.
Rural areas in and around Mugaiyur in Tamil nadu, India have either very rich or ridiculously poor people, there's no middle class. The poor people of the Dalit community suffer every day and are looked upon as shameful. Some of the problems they face are child sex workers, lack of child rights, poor education, lack of knowledge towards STD's, child labour, unhygienic living conditions, lack of health services, low self esteem, starvation, gender inequality, etc.
I want to go to India with The SAFE Foundation to work with the Dalit community to try and make improvements to all of these issues by running workshops about the environment and how to protect it, sexual health issues, how to boost their self esteem, etc. We also want to provide health services with the local health teams. Also improve and set up village industries, including brick laying for women, farming cows, mullberry farming... and so much more!!!
In order to help out on this Indian project I need to raise £1000 by the end of May to pay for flights, accommodation, food, etc. Please support me by donating just £2... or more if you wish :P
