Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Between 15th/18th June 2012 Jon, Jim, Bunny and I will be walking around the coastal path of The Isle of Wight. Our aim is to complete nearly 70 miles of walking (mainly in 3 days) and in doing so, raise awareness and money for The Neuro Foundation.

My name is Ian Carter and my youngest son James has Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

We were shocked and devestated when we found out that James had this condition at the age of 3, it affects 1 in every 2,500 people worldwide and there are over 25,000 cases in the UK.

How could this happen to us? Carole and I had never known of anyone in either of our families to have had NF Type 1 even though it is the world's most common neuro-genetic condition. 50% of those affected will occur in families with no previous history of NF Type 1.

James showed all the signs at an early age that he has NF Type 1. These include café au lait marks on his skin, freckling in the armpits, Benign skin lumps (neurofibromas), tumours on the nerves, malformation of the long bones, learning difficulties and speech problems.... the list goes on.

NF Type 1 is so unpredictable, the symptoms vary from person to person and are different to all of those who are affected. People may never know they even have NF Type 1 and as of yet, there is no cure. James' symptoms greatly affect the way that he tackles each day.

We are very proud of James. Every day is a challenge to him in one way or another and he never complains. It has not been easy for him to face the endless hospital appointments and operations that he has had to endure. He will unfortunately go through this for the rest of his life.

We would like to do something for James and show our appreciation by supporting the Neuro Foundation by raising money and awareness of this terrible condition.

As already mentioned, the aim is to walk around the Isle of Wight with my friends Jon, Jim and Bunny (Dave).... nearly 70 miles in 3 and a bit days. To date, my longest walk with these guys has been about 15 miles in one day and I fully and quite confidently predict that I will be bringing up the rear of the procession most of the time!

With your help the money raised will go towards providing a greater awareness of Neurofibromatosis, aiding further research and funding Specialist Advisors around the U.K. with the benefit of a dedicated helpline.
