Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Why i choose to raise money for alzheimers/dementia scotland.

Alzheimers is a progressive disease of the brain that slowly impairs  memory and cognitive function. The cause is unknown and there is no cure. The time from diagnosis to death can be as little as 3 yrs in people over 80. Dementia is the leading cause of death for women over 80. There is very little help for the patients and in Inverness there is a huge waiting list for places like woodlands and a lot of the time the patient deteriorates so badly by the time the space is available they are no longer fit to go. It is a heartbreaking disease which gets very little funding compaired to many other charities. I have seen this disease first hand over 2 generations of my family and it is the most awful thing to see. My aunt and uncle and both grandparents suffered and changed over a period of time. I at times couldnt bring myself to go and visit as i would like to remember them the way they used to be. My uncle got it very young and he never got to really appreciate his grand daughters which is so sad when i see the bond my children have with my parents, it is an unbreakable bond and they would do anything for them which is the way i was with my grandparents before this disease hit. My nana got it almost instantly when my granda passed away suddenly she changed overnight, lost weight, didnt care what people thought of her, couldnt feed herself or go to the toilet on her own it really is one of the worst things i have seen as it completely changed both her life and ours as a family. She eventually moved into our family home where i gave up my bedroom for her and i would sleep on the couch which is the least i could do for someone who was a huge part of my life. My nana died of dementia and to see her deteriorate from beginning to the end was awful. This disease needs to find a cure!!!

We have a team of around 25 runners who will be taking part in the baxters 5k or 10k little nessie and fun run if you want to join our team just let me know.
