Story
The Kidney Centre Appeal
The TUN (Transplant, Urology and Nephrology) directorate in Beaumont Hospital offers a full range of therapies for diseases of the kidney, bladder and ureterus and is also home to the National Kidney Centre for Transplantation. As well as transplantation, other treatments offered in the directorate for renal failure include Haemodialysis, Peritoneal dialysis and Plasma Exchange Therapy. It is also a cancer centre for rapid access prostate cancer services under the National Cancer Control Programme.
One of our objectives is to establish a centre of excellence for robot-assisted surgery for prostate cancer at Beaumont Hospital. Robotic-assisted surgery was developed to allow surgeons to perform complex procedures more easily, through improved visualisation, more accurate control of instruments, and increased ease-of-use. Robotic surgery is a new and advanced form of laparoscopic surgery which is reported to be potentially the most effective, least invasive surgical approach to prostate cancer treatment available today. Currently, there is no facility, within the public university hospital system, to offer this state-of-the-art surgery to prostate cancer patients.
