Story
Firstly, thank you very much for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
In August 2013 the three of us will be attempting to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 metres above sea level.
We are self-funding this trip and want to make it clear that 100% of what is raised will be going towards our chosen charity.
Dad was a very keen mountaineer and photographer. He had climbed every peak in the Lake District and because of his passion for walking, we all felt like this was an ideal challenge for us to do in his memory.
Dad suffered from a rare form of cancer called Pseudomyxoma – it only affects 1-2 people per million each year. He was diagnosed in late January 2010 and was treated at Basingstoke Hospital (one of only two treatment centres in England). He spent about 6 weeks down in Basingstoke being treated by the most amazing doctors and nurses. Throughout this time, mum was able to live on the hospital site in a shared flat that was specifically for the family of pseudomyxoma patients. We were also able to spend several weeks there in hospital accommodation. The fact that mum was able to spend every day and be there for him was invaluable and we are all so grateful for that. Because of the level of support and help we all received, we really wanted to give something back to them. So, the purpose of our challenge is to raise money for the Pseudomyxoma ward at Basingstoke Hospital so that they can continue to offer help and accommodation to the families of other Pseudomyxoma patients, as well as contributing towards their research and development funds in this specific area.
Thank you for your help and support, Matthew, Kathryn & Emily
