Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am the Principal of the ‘International British School of Bucharest’ in Romania. I grew up in a small town in the north of New Zealand called Tauranga and came from a family of avid climbers.
This is a childhood dream that first sprung into my imagination when reading Hemmingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro. I have not been to Africa. This is my first visit and so I am filled with a sense of excitement and also apprehension that always comes with travelling into the unknown.
I have always loved climbing and feel that charity is a worthwhile endeavour and so linking the two, organising a climb for charity seems like an ideal match. I believe that Light into Europe does important work in educating the public and in helping those with disabilities and anything that the community can do to make that task easier is worthwhile.
Light into Europe Charity mission statement:
Light into Europe’s mission is to develop the full potential of the Romanian sensory impaired children and young people to lead independent lives. Light into Europe’s objective is to help the Romanian sensory disadvantaged children and young people to improve their lives, to expand their possibilities and to become active and accepted members of the Romanian society. Light into Europe Charity share the vision of a world in which sensory impaired children and young people enjoy the same rights, opportunities, responsibilities, fulfilment and quality of life as their able-bodied peers.
I will be doing the climb with my brother - we are very close and so this is as important aspect of the climb for me. We are both adventure lovers, worked as diving instructors, surfed and teenagers, and spent much of our free time in the great outdoors. He has a real passion for climbing and so is the perfect climbing partner for me.
My brother and I will begin our ascent on the 9 of July 2012. We aim to complete the climb in 6 days. With an elevation of 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the World’s biggest climbing challenges. Light into Europe Charity need every bit of support they can get in order to carry out their life-enhancing work. You can be a part of this by sponsoring me and my brother in our great adventure. All donations will be received with much gratitude. For more information about Light into Europe Charity’s work go to their website: www.lightintoeurope.org or find them on Facebook.
