Story
My story began in 2014 with a trip to one of the world's poorest countries, Malawi. A landlocked country located in the South-East of Africa. I was given this amazing opportunity through my employment with 'World Duty Free' and their association with 'The One Foundation'. The One Foundation is a UK based Charity (1118810), who are committed to working in those countries that are most acutely in need and where they believe they can make the greatest impact with various projects.
This trip was life-changing . It changed my perspective on everything, the day to day things that we take for granted now seemed a luxury. My time in Malawi was extraordinary and something that will never leave my heart.
On reflection of this powerful trip, I cried for the entire 15 hour flight home. I cried like a baby. The experience I had opened my eyes to the poverty and deprivation that the individuals and families I supported are exposed to every single day. Yet their faces are full of joy, hearts full of love and souls full of song.
My tears were of happiness and fulfilment, for I had been fortunate enough to have this life changing experience when I was at a low point in my life. It changed my outlook and gave me a passion to help and make a difference. Something that will never leave me.
So much so, I have taken it upon myself to visit that beautiful country once again!
October 2016, myself and another inspiring individual, will be jetting off for a two week trip to Malawi. We will cycle to and from several schools, orphanages and communities offering our help and support to all the smiling faces we see. Helping with water, food and support projects.
Before the vaccinations are due and the boarding cards need to be printed, there is another important issue to tick off the list...Fundraising!
This is were we ask all of you who visit this page to donate and change somebody's life. An individual, a child, a family, a community. Everything helps.
Just £8 can feed a child for a year. An entire year!
As little as £5 can help to maintain the existing water pumps that can provide a lifetimes supply of clean, safe water for an entire community.
Between now and October we will be holding a number of different fundraising events, trying to raise as much support, supplies and awareness as possible. Our page will be regularly updated with our ventures and we hope you can help in anyway possible.
Our first event will be a 'Walk for Water' challenge. This will involve carrying two gallons of water for 12 hours per day for 3 consecutive days. This is representative of a typical, daily commute for water in Malawi. The challenge will not just involve me, but also my fantastic team of colleagues.
Several of us also plan to 'Live below the poverty line!' Living on just £5 for an entire week. Sounds easy right? However with all being foodies and not being able to go a full hour without thinking about food; it will be a real challenge. Yet something that thousands of people have to survive on.
So we have lots more fun and challenges to encourage everyone to dig deep. Any suggestion of fundraising ideas or challenges please let us know. Updates will come regularly and before all events. We will have plenty of photos to keep you entertained and show you all exactly what we are doing :).
You can make a huge difference by donating and It couldn't be easier by simply clicking a button. For the price of a coffee you could change a life and help future projects across Malawi.
One water believe in the ethos of The Butterfly Project. Lets hope together our little flutters can make a huge difference.
'The tiny flutter or a butterfly's wing can cause a cyclone on the other side of the world. It's how we think about our work at One, because 100% of our profit funds life-changing projects in the world's harshest regions'.
We cannot wait to get over there and be greeted by these smiling faces and songs of hope. Our opportunity to help make One Big Difference.
