The issue of human beings seeking refuge is timeless, it spans history. Often we are quite unaware of the huge movements of people fleeing war, persecution and natural disaster, it is a ubiquitous and perpetual problem, one that only comes to our attention and which touches our hearts when the media bothers to report it and we bother to discuss it. I wrote this song about refugees many months ago, reflecting on various campaigns I had been involved in, ranging from big news items such as the Palestinian conflict, or less well known campaigns to helping those running from persecution because of their gender or sexuality. Given the current news attention, I felt it was the right time to use the song in order to do something good, other than making pretty sounds and so I took a Saturday afternoon and did this ramshackle production using a shoddy microphone, a mobile phone and some very limited knowledge of movie maker. Please listen, like, share, but most importantly, donate, and even more importantly, get active. The activist is not the person who complains that the river is dirty and gives money in order for it to be cleaned, but the person who cleans it up. This is for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire refugee forum who do great work in welcoming asylum seekers and refugees to what I hope is a welcoming, warm and ultimately human city, where connections are made between peoples and places and solidarity remains the overarching quality of human nature.
