About St Mary's, Lydney: Building A Community Where Everyone Matters.
St Mary’s, a grade 1 listed 13 th century church, is the largest community building in Lydney, Forest Of Dean, Gloucestershire, - a focal gathering place for the community at many events during the year. Our building has significant physical restrictions that inhibit mobility and some sectors of the community taking a full part in what we offer (i.e. the disabled, deaf and visually impaired). We wish to develop the flexibility and facilities of St Mary's, increasing the effectiveness of our community role as a focal point of cohesion, celebration, and service to the most vulnerable.
The building will have the floor levelled and historic stones repaired so will not only be more attractive but will be safer for users. The removal of pews in the south aisle and creation of a bespoke hospitality servery will create an open area which will enable large groups of people to gather at community events, celebrations and concerts, facilitating interaction and good hospitality and empowering the more vulnerable. In addition, bands and choirs will have space to perform at community events. Redecoration and treatment of the walls, monuments and ceiling will enhance the beauty of the building. A revitalised toilet area will not only be attractive but will be accessible to all, including wheelchair users. Additionally, an upgraded sound and loop system and greatly improved lighting will be of huge benefit to all -We’re Building A Community Where Everyone Matters!
