On Boxing day 2011 a CT scan showed 'a lesion' in our baby's brain. This was after Sky had been unwell for 4 weeks vomiting, head tilting and declining before our eyes. Within a couple of hours we were blue lighted to GOSH and before the new year arrived he had 2 major brain surgeries and a diagnosis of ependymoma , a cancerous brain tumour. He had chemo until July when a MRI showed the tumour was growing again. Sky had a third surgery in August and we applied to have Proton Radiotherapy in the States. Whilst waiting to see if we would get funding we started on an oral chemo to try and hold the tumour at bay. We were granted funding on the NHS but a scan in Sept showed more tumour growth - too much to make the Proton therapy a viable option. So we decided to go for yet further surgery followed by immediate radiotherapy here in the UK. We then had 9 months of clear scans until our world crashed again with another tumour. Sky had his fifth brain surgery and a second round of radiotherapy with many many risks attached. We were given the worst of news after we finished radiotherapy; the tumour they removed had grown back and Sky had a second tumour towards the front of his brain. We are now enjoying each day as it comes.
So little is known about childhood brain tumours and the prognosis is not good for a lot of children. Those that do survive are often left with life limiting disabilities. Funding given to research is, quite frankly, shameful. Without this a cure will never be found. Please know that by donating to Fighting Ependymoma for Sky David, you are making a difference.
A real difference.
You are helping to fund vital research. No money goes to CEO's or on advertising. All funds go direct to research projects to find the cure.
Fight for the cure. Fight for the children. Fight Ependymoma.
