Story
In 2012 I set myself the challenge of raising £40,000 in my 40's for various charities by completing a major challenge, sporting or other, every year until 2021 - the "£40k for 40 years" mission, as it is now known, was born! So far I have trekked to Machu Picchu for Breast Cancer Care, completed the Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon for Mary's Meals and Mercy Corps, ran a 40 mile Ultramarathon for Dementia Forward & Alzheimer's Society, visited a Compassion UK project in Ghana & undertaken a 350 mile cycle around Cuba, an open water swim in Salford Quays & completed the Great North Run for The MS Society.
In May 2017 I shall trek the Grand Canyon together with my great friend Laura Brett. As we are both funding our trip ourselves, all of the money raised will go to the charity. The trek will include a descent of over 3,100 ft into the Grand Canyon following an ancient Indian trail that leads us into the breathtaking Havasupai Indian Reservation, where we will be required to help set up the camps that will provide our main accommodation during the trek. It's going to be hot, dirty & physically demanding but hopefully the breathtaking views will be worth it!
Our chosen charity, Mercy UK, helps women struggling with life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, self-harm, depression, or the effects of abuse. Through its residential Christian discipleship programme, Mercy UK helps women break free from cycles of self-destructive behaviour and transform their lives. Laura & I have both supported Mercy UK for a number of years and admire the fantastic work it does.
