We create choice & opportunity to improve the lives of homeless people

Story

Thanks on behalf of the whole team for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page and for helping us to fund the fantastic work the Mustard Tree does in our local community.

The Mustard Tree helps many different people. This includes

those living on the streets, people recovering from addictions,

those who have just been released from prison, families fleeing domestic abuse, those struggling on state benefits or others marginalised in society through poverty.

The Mustard Tree takes a 5 step incremental approach to helping the needy:

Step 1 Getting to know people

Soup run: On every Friday and Sunday night, sandwiches, hot drinks and soup are distributed near Piccadilly Station in Manchester to 30-70 people who live on the streets, in hostels or temporary accommodation. Many are invited to The Mustard Tree premises during the week to receive blankets and warm clothes and other support. The soup run also offers an opportunity to talk and befriend those who come.

Step 2 Help when really needed

Emergency food parcels, free bedding and dry clothing for people who are desperate and on the streets. These are all provided free.

Step 3 A place to belong

The Mustard Tree allows people to get involved by helping to collect and deliver furniture, helping around the warehouse, sorting clothes or food and numerous other tasks. Their participation as volunteers helps to add structure to their week where many of them are still leading fairly chaotic lifestyles and are in need of regularity and routine.

For some, it is simply something to get them out of the house, for others, it is a place for friendship and belonging. Courses in English, cookery, photography, computer skills and creative workshops in music, poetry and jewelry help people become socially integrated.

Step 4 The Dignity Project

The Dignity Project was set up to help those with limited or no income gain access to second hand furniture, household items, electrical goods and clothes to enable them to set up home. Our warehouse is dependent on donations from households and businesses across Greater Manchester.

Step 5 Freedom Project

This is a 16-week project structured to help people move into employment. The last 4 weeks of this course are work experience in a company environment. The Mustard Tree has many supporters who believe in helping people and can offer simple structured jobs as part of the course.

Our Challenge

To climb all the peaks above 3000 feet in Wales, covering 30 miles with almost 6000 feet of height gain within 24 hours.
