Story
Hello everyone!
This summer I'm heading off on an adventure to Malawi to volunteer in the Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic for 4 weeks, as part of the MSOR (Medicine Students Overseas Relief) scheme. I'm just finishing up my fourth year of medicine at the moment and I'm really looking forward to becoming a "Billy", a tag the local's of Cape MacClear have fondly assigned to the volunteers that staff the clinic. I'm determined to bring over some much needed funds with me and would greatly appreciate your support!
About Billy and the Clinic
The Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic was set up in 2004, by an Irish woman, Mags Riordan, in memory of her son Billy. Billy loved to travel, and had a special fondness for the community of Cape MacClear, in Malawi. He tragically drowned in Lake Malawi in 1999. After Billy’s death Mags visited Malawi to place a memorial headstone. She too fell in love with the village and it’s people. The nearest hospital at that time was a dangerous 4 hour car-journey away, and the community was in dire need of a local healthcare clinic. With the generosity of her community in Ireland, Mags fundraised enough to open the clinic in 2004. For the majority of the population, this was their first chance to access any form of healthcare. It has since expanded to include a 12-bed inpatient HIV/AIDS unit.
Today the clinic operates on a 24/7 basis and a has a number of permanent staff who work alongside volunteers. The Trust also employs and trains 32 local people incl. lab assistants and counsellors to name a few.
Donations
As a condition of MSOR, I'm covering all personal costs myself (flights, vaccinations etc.). That means every euro raised will go directly to the clinic.
THANK YOU! <3
