A note from Nikki: in Memory of Morag
Many of you who know me well, will know that I’m the Executive Director of Prevent Breast Cancer and that it’s not only my job but a cause to which I’ve dedicated most of my working life. I believe in our vision of preventing breast cancer for future generations by funding ground-breaking research and I’m proud of everything we’ve achieved so far.
But sadly too many people are still affected. The UK statistics are 53,000 people are diagnosed and 11,700 women die each year. Globally there were 1.7 million diagnoses in 2012. But statistics don’t tell the full story, they don’t articulate the emotional impact of this devastating disease. Through my work I have met hundreds of inspirational women and men who have been affected by breast cancer, these people inspire me to keep working harder.
In April, my close friend Morag Siller passed away. Mo was an inspiration to many, she was a talented actress and a dedicated Patron of the charity, she helped to raise £100,000s. Mo had a zest for life, she was mischievous and feisty, but most of all she had a heart of gold. Despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer she continued to work hard and perform in plays and on TV, she did not let breast cancer beat her down! Which is why I’ve challenged myself to do something I wouldn’t usually do and put myself completely out of my comfort zone.
So on 21st- 24th September I will be cycling from London 2 Paris in memory of Morag.
