Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our TEAM JAXON - ArcelorMittal Orbit Abseil - JustGiving Page.

All 10 TEAM JAXON members, made up of family and friends all from the City of Swansea, Wales, have accepted the dare and on Sunday 25th September 2016 will each take the plunge and abseil 262ft down the UK's tallest sculpture - The ArcelorMittal Orbit - to raise money for The Children's Air Ambulance.

A little bit about Jaxon's story and why TEAM JAXON are taking part in what will be an amazing feat in support of The Children's Air Ambulance ... Jaxon Jude Phillips-Evans was born in January 2015 and was post-natally diagnosed with Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome).  An echo cardiogram performed the day following his birth confirmed an Atrial Septal Defect (Congenital Heart Defect).  At 5 weeks of age doctors also found Jaxon was showing signs of Pulmonary Hypertension (PH).

Jaxon has since taken us on quite a rollercoaster of a journey to which he still has us all very much firmly strapped in.  He is now under the expert care of the UK's Pulmonary Hypertension Team based at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, with a confirmed diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (IPAH).

Back in March this year, after rapid deterioration in his condition, The Children's Air Ambulance accompanied by the WATCH Paediatric Intensive Care Retrieval Team, retrieved Jaxon from our local hospital, Morriston Hospital, Swansea, to get him speedily to where he needed to be; to the care of his specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.  Following commencing him on high tech medication and getting him through a recent ductal stent placement procedure on his heart, his GOSH specialists are pleased with his current response and progress, with his condition currently as stable as can be.

Jaxon continues to dazzle us with his bravery, strength, determination and ability to smile and giggle his way through every day regardless of what he is going through at the time.  Taking into account his health concerns, he has amazed everyone including his health and therapy professionals with the speed of his development. He brings nothing but joy to those all around him - a true teacher of life, an inspiration and our very own Superhero.

Since Jaxon's birth in January 2015 we have had our eyes very much opened to many outstanding charities and organisations out there providing invaluable service and support to both individuals and their families without question in their time of need.  The list of those who we will remain forever indebted to has grown and continues to grow every day.  Our aim in taking on such a challenge as the ArcelorMittal Orbit Abseil is to both raise awareness of such outstanding causes as well as raising funds to begin giving something back to the very charities, organisations and services that have supported and continue to support Jaxon and our family.  The first being The Children's Air Ambulance.

A little bit about The Children's Air Ambulance ... The Children's Air Ambulance receive no government funding, relying solely on donations to fly critically ill children across the UK to the specialist care they need.  They know that the longer a sick child is out of hospital, the greater the risk.  The Children's Air Ambulance helicopter not only flies fast, but also serves as a flying intensive care unit for children.  They can deliver children to safety approximately four times faster than transport by road.  When every second counts, this can be a matter of life and death.

Every day in the UK, there are two children who need the help of The Children's Air Ambulance.  But presently they can only reach one in every three children that need them.  By donating you will be helping The Children's Air Ambulance reach them all.  The Children's Air Ambulance - keeping hope alive!

A little bit about The ArcelorMittal Orbit ... The ArcelorMittal Orbit stands tall as Britain's largest sculpture, part of the Olympic legacy that transformed East London, and a landmark in its own right.  Made of 35,000 bolts and enough steel to make 265 double-decker buses, the ArcelorMittal Orbit offers extraordinary 20-mile views over Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the London skyline.

On abseil day, donning a safety harness 262ft above the City of London, we will be launching ourselves from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit taking part in the UK's highest freefall abseil on the UK's tallest sculpture (yes we are all barking mad but all in the name of a worthy cause!).

Please if you are able to make any contribution click on the donate button above/below; even the smallest of donations will be gratefully received (every penny counts!). Don't forget to also Gift Aid your donation if you are a UK tax payer!  You can also donate by text message straight to our page by texting our unique code JJPE77 and your chosen amount of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070.  Alternatively if you so wish, cash donations can be made to any member of our team. All cash donations will be added to our page as 'offline donations' so they will be included in our running total. We all greatly appreciate your generosity and support.  Please help us reach our target of £3,500 and hopefully even exceed it!

Donate to help The Children's Air Ambulance reach more critically ill children across the country and keep hope alive!

Thank you for reading our story!  Wish us luck!
