Story
14/5/2014 UPDATE!
I am glad to report that I managed to complete the full 26.2 miles of the Milton Keynes Marathon! Never believe anyone who tells you Milton Keynes is flat - it certainly is not! Took me a bit longer than I wanted but I am pleased to have got round daily unscathed and more importantly raised money for the Florence Nightingale Hospice.
Thank you so much to everyone who has sponsored, encouraged, babysat, and came out in force to support me on this crazy journey I found myself on. Although it has been a big challenge for someone who did the occasional 5K run, I have learnt a lot about myself and discovered what can be achieved if you set yourself a Target, stay focussed and determined, not giving into distractions or the little ‘chimp’ on your shoulder saying "you are not good enough" or to "give up”. This was certainly something which many recognised in Jen.
The amount I have raised has certainly blown me away and will go a long way to helping the Hospice meet its £600,000 budget - so once again thank you very much indeed!
Now deciding on my next Target……..
Love to you all,
David

For those who know little about me and have stumbled on this page and are thinking ‘why is he mad enough to run 26.2 miles’, let me disclose a little of my story and who I am raising money for….
Jen, my wife and the mother of my 3 amazing children, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in 2005. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff and more importantly Jen’s incredible determination, humour and faith, she ended her journey on this earth in July 2010 after a roller coaster ride of joy, tears, pain and laughter. She was only 36.
Because of the amazing care of the dedicated professionals at Florence Nightingale Hospice Jen was able to part this world with peace and dignity, although left her family and friends with a big whole in their lives.
Florence Nightingale Hospice provides a first class specialist palliative care service which is accessible and free of charge to those with a life-limiting illness. Hospice care is all about the person being more than a patient and finding ways to improve quality of life through symptom control, pain relief, emotional and spiritual support. Families and close friends are also involved as they are often central to the well-being of those in our care.
I am running the Milton Keynes Marathon for the hospice to raise awareness of the cause, but more importantly to raise much-needed funds to help others who could find themselves in a similar situation. Unfortunately terminal illness does not respect anyone, whatever age and however healthy, sporty, educated or wealthy they may be. By donating you will be helping Florence Nightingale Hospice continue their work and help others in the same position.
Thank you for your support.
David
