In October last year my best friend Nina Davies and I decided that we had done half marathons and that it was time to take on a new challenge, thus the obvious option was to sign up for the Green Man Ultra Marathon - a 44 mile x country course following the Community Forest Path around the city of Bristol, although the word 'Path' should be used very, very loosely here, in that there is no nice path as we had imagined when signing up, instead the course takes on field, upon field, upon field with the odd bit of tarmac here and there.
At the point of signing up we had not ran further than 20 miles, we therefore figured this 44 mile x country would certainly challenge our bodies and minds.
In the last few weeks we have decided that having a charitable cause to be running for would help push us on during any possible moments where we may feel we have nothing left to give, the charity of which we have chosen is Headway, a charity extremely close to our hearts. Headway is a charity that supports those that have undergone brain trauma, some of these traumas of which being the result of:
- strokes
- epilepsy
- blow to the head (result of accidents or sports injury)
- brain haemorrhage
- meningitis
We are really hoping to raise a lot of money for Headway to help pay for the support that they provide to individuals and their families and therefore we have decided to not only take on the Green Man Ultra Marathon but to also endure the Brecon Beacons Trekfest, which is one of the toughest charity treks in the UK. The Trek involves 29 miles across the highest peaks in South Wales including Pen y Fan (886m), Corn Du (873m), Cribyn (795m) and Fan y Big (719m), this of which being the training ground for the SAS.
We have two men to add to our team who are taking on a challenge each with us, multiple Iron Man medal holder Steve Sheppard who has been coaching us on a weekly basis for the last four months for the Green Man Ultra Marathon and Rich Hearn who Nina keeps in check on a daily basis in the office and who teamed up with her to trek the Brecon Beacons last year in treacherous conditions also in aid of Headway.
We are asking you to join us in our challenge by showing your support and donating to an amazing charity.
