Story
Cambridge House and ADT Fourth World are both charities committed to tackling poverty, and both are located in Addington Square just a stone’s throw from our home. We pass them every day, and it would be great if you could help us support their work.
Cambridge House was founded in 1889 by students from Cambridge University as part of the Settlement Movement, to combat the effects of poverty and deprivation in one of the poorest parts of South London. Students and academics lived and worked for a time within disadvantaged communities, and as a result the future leaders and decision-makers of England became connected to ordinary citizens and became committed to addressing the roots of poverty.
Today, While Southwark is a lively and diverse place in which to live, it is also still very deprived. It is ranked as the 41st most deprived borough in England; all of our local neighbourhoods fall within the 10% most deprived communities in the country and 33% of our children live in poverty.
Cambridge House remains committed to tackling poverty in the community. They equip children and adults with the tools they need to break free from poverty, providing people with the help and support they urgently require, whilst simultaneously developing sustainable and preventive solutions to the causes of poverty.
