Story
Cambridge House and ADT Fourth World are both charities committed to tackling poverty, and both are located in Addington Square just a stone’s throw from our home. We pass them every day, and it would be great if you could help us support their work.
ADT Fourth World was founded in 1957 by Joseph Wresinski, chaplain to families placed in an emergency housing camp in Noisy-le-Grand, near Paris. The term “fourth world” echoes the “fourth order” of the French Revolution: those who were considered too poor and uneducated to vote towards a new Constitution. Wresinski wished “to get [people living in poverty] to appear in public, in the places where future is shaped”. The charity expanded to the UK in 1967 and continues to empower people with experience of poverty to express their views and offer solutions to the problems affecting their lives while offering policy makers an invaluable insight into fighting poverty from the bottom up.
