Story
Thank you for visiting SCI's fundraising page.
SCI's vision is a world free from the poverty sustaining diseases schistosomiasis
and intestinal worms (hookworm, whipworm and roundworm). This would allow the
world’s poorest populations to be healthier, develop fully, learn effectively,
raise families, and be productive members of their communities, thereby giving
them a chance to break free from poverty.
Since 2002 we have been working towards this goal delivering treatment for these horrific diseases to the poorest of the poor in sub-Saharan Africa. 230 million people, one-third of the total population of Africa, need a regular annual treatment of praziquantel, and 400 million need a regular annual treatment of albendazole, to eliminate these parasitic diseases from their bodies. SCI needs just 50pence per person per year to treat these diseases across Africa and give these people a significantly better life.
SCI has already assisted 16 countries in overseeing the delivery
of over 100 million treatments for schistosomiasis, and many more against
intestinal worms (soil-transmitted helminthes). Our first target is to ensure a further 200 million treatments are delivered by 2018, and our second is to move towards elimination of schistosomiasis as a health problem by 2020. Please read more about
the work we do at www.schisto.org
