This is the 8th annual 'Scuba Santas' event, started by some UK scuba divers who just wanted an excuse to get together around Christmas time to have a dive and some fun.
Each year we dress up in Santa Claus costumes, go diving and raise lots of money for the RNLI and DDRC Healthcare. We raise money from sponsorship, donations and a fantastic prize draw.
The event is held at the National Diving & Activity Centre (NDAC) near Chepstow, which provides us with a fantastic, easily accessible and welcoming location. NDAC donates half the gate money from Scuba Santas and give us mince pies & hot chocolate!
Our event partner DDRC Healthcare is collecting the funds & will distribute 50% to the RNLI on our behalf.In 2007 we raised a few hundred pounds for the RNLI with 8 participating Santas, a viking, a snowman, and a fairy. In 2010 we broke our own record with over 150 divers and over £10,000 raised! In total we have now raised over £22,000 and our aim is to raise another £2,000 in 2014.
The 2014 event happened on Sunday 14th December 2014 at NDAC and saw around 75 participants diving dressed as Santa.
Not only is this a great advert for British scuba diving, it also raises funds for 2 brilliant charities who do a lot for divers, and despite the freezing temperatures puts a smile on some otherwise very grumpy people’s faces!
