The Neonatal unit Wigan has a special place in our heart. In October 2009 my my wife was just over 29 weeks pregnant all was well ( or as we thought ) until one evening she started getting abdominal pain, at first we thought it was just the usual braxton hicks but they got worse as the evening went on.
She was rushed to the maternity ward and found that the baby was coming, they tried to do that was possible to try prevent this but she was coming no matter what.
Next we knew there was doctors and nurses coming from no where and soon the room was full, we was told what was going to happen and not to worry, But you can't not worry this is our child our first born.
She went through a very difficult labour and 56 hours later Our baby was born, a 3lb,10oz very small, my wife didn't have chance to look at her she was whisked away by the neonatal staff.
Due to some difficultise my wife then got rushed to theatre for operation. not even knowing if our baby girl was ok or not.

While she was down in theatre I was asked if I wanted to see our little girl, i was told what to expect when i got there and to ignore the beeps and tubes.
Walking in and seeing all the babies in Incubators it got to me straight away withought even seeing our girl i just broke down.
They took me to the side and basicaly cuddled me telling me its ok.
Once i was calm they took me to see her.
She was so tiny with tubes everywhere hooked up to all these machines.
Emotions were just running away within me i couldn't hold back the tears.
I spent some time just looking at her until they came and told me my wife was out of theatre.

It was the following day before my wife could go see her and we was told she doing really well and no complication.
She was soon feeding and we was able to hold her. It was amazing no words can discribe the feeling you get.

My wife was discharged from hospital and we spent every minuite was could possible to spend in the neonatal.
One day when we arrived was a greated my the stay telling us she had been taken out of intensive care and put into special care as she was doing really well. she was in there a couple of weeks and she was putting on a good weight.

One evening he monitor kept beeping and her sats kept dropping the staff kept coming in seeing to her and reasuring with smiles, but you know yourself somethings wrong.

Then the following morning the phonecall we all dread to hear.
she had been taken to critical care and was in isolation.
we rushed to hospital to be greated my the head staff and took to the side room were she told us she was very poorly and they was doing tests to find out what was wrong, we was also told what to expect when we walked in.

We just broke down when was saw her she was so pale looked so weak. from doing really well to fighting for her life.
everyday seemed like it was a week. we spent all day and some evenings there,
Every day we asked is she any better but to be told No improvment was like a blow to the face. Then i asked if she was going to die the staff just said we are doing everything for her that we possible can.

i just had to ask that silly question but i wanted to know!
We was told we had to go home and rest as we had been there so long. And if there was any chenge they would let us know.

We took there advice and got some sleep.

Its funny what goes through you mind when something like this happens. planning a funeral telling the family its a horrible time in your life and the stress and emotions just keep you going it think.

The following morning we arrived and the room she ws in was empty the worst possible has happend , one of the staff said dont look so worried she over here having a bottle.

Imagin the look on our faces to see her in the arms of the nurse no tubes drinking a bottle. We just bothed laughed and cried at the same time.
we asked what how.

They explained that its one of them things all her results came back normal no virus, swine flu nothing and her sats came back up quite quickly, she would have to go into ICU for couple of days to make sure she ok but she seems to be fine.
She spent a couple fo days in ICU then went back into special care and spent 2 weeks in there where she got stronger and stronger until we was told she was ready to go home.

we spent the weekend in the family room and on the monday we left the unit to go start and family at home.

We owe our hearts to the staff at neonatal staff and Teona wouldn't be here if it wasn't to there time and determination to helping sick and young babies.

They dont get enough credit for what they do. when your in there your part of a family you get to know there names and have a laugh and joke, they give there time and to speak and to make you feel at home those staff desrve a medal.
But they also need the Equipment and without our and your help equiment breaks an they need new for old . so please please help us to help them cos they helped us by donating to this great cause. every little helps
