Story
After
doing intensive training as a Yoga teacher in India in 1991 I
travelled to Calcutta. I was so appalled at the conditions of families living
on the pavements there that I volunteered to help in one of Calcutta
Rescue's Street clinics. Under a scorching sun, families would queue
from early morning to get a place under the makeshift awning that we called a
clinic. Indian and British doctors offered free medical care, medication
and baby food to families who literally lived by the side of roads, under
flyovers or in sewers. Some made their beds on railway tracks at night after
the last train had left Howrah station. These
images and the dignity of the mothers in particular has never left me.
