Story
From the early 70’s Sheila worked with children and families in Oxfordshire, focusing on Autism and the Autistic Spectrum, mainly in the education field. Sheila dedicated over 30 years to raising awareness about autism and providing practical support to families, and better services for autistic children.
She was one of the founding members of ‘Children in Touch’ and its highly acclaimed project Autism Family Support
The Charity aims to support the therapeutic education, and general welfare, of children and young adults with autism in Oxfordshire and surrounding areas. In the 1970s the charity pioneered the development of Autism Resource Bases (formally known as the Chinnor Resource Units) providing innovative education for autistic children in mainstream settings. Today the local authority continues to run the Bases, with additional resources provided by Children in Touch. The Charity relies upon donations and fund raising activities.
Since 2002 The Autism Family Support Project has been a vital part of the charity's work, supporting children and young people on the autism spectrum, and their families. You can find details about this project by clicking here. Sheila has pioneered this project.
