Shared Interest Foundation is appealing to raise £5,000 to enable the replanting of crops washed away by the recent floods in Malawi.
Following the recent news of the devestating floods in Malawi we contacted our partner the Malawi Fairtrade Network to see if any of their members had been affected and if we could help. Three of their tea co-operatives have seen extensive damage and they were appealing for assistance to help the producers affected. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed and crops have been washed away.
Whilst an international appeal for aid has been launched that will address short term needs such as shelter, food and blankets, there is a longer term need as the loss of tea crops means the producers have lost their livelihoods. The funds we will raise will go towards the costs of these crops in time for the next harvest so that the Fairtrade producers affected can continue to trade and earn a fair living for themselves and their families.
