Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
- The Sumatran Orangutan are a critically endangered species, the closest of the great apes to extinction. Their habitat is, on a daily basis, shrinking through the deforestation of the pristine jungle which is being systematically eradicated every single day. In it's place? Palm oil plantation and gold mines. The most biodiverse jungle in the world where Orangutan, Tigers, Elephants and Rhino all co-exist. All being torn up so we can have a cheap oil for our biscuits, cakes and cosmetics.
I've been lucky enough to have seen these amazing animals in the wild, albeit in Borneo not Sumatra, they are the most gentle of animals living mainly solitary lives, they have little impact on their habitat eating, primarily, fruit. They spend most of their time living in the trees, even building nests to sleep in.
Every penny of what I raise will go to the Sumatran Orangutan Society who are dedicated to turning the situation around, they do this through:
- Supporting grassroots projects, empowering local people to become guardians of their rainforest.
- Restoring damaged Orangutan habitat through tree plantation programmes
- Campaigning on issues threatening the survival of Orangutans in the wild.
- Raising awareness about the importance of protecting Orangutans and their rainforest home.
